About Us

Michael Academy is an early intervention learning centre for children with special needs. We provide a loving, accepting, safe environment for children between the ages of 3-6 who struggle to cope in mainstream schools with big classrooms due to difficulties in social skills, communication and behaviours. We aim to optimise each child’s potential by working with them according to an individualised education plan that has been devised by a speech therapist, occupational therapist and teacher. We believe in the importance of a multi-disciplinary team and encourage parents to become an integral part of this team.

Children receive individual and small group attention as we believe in a low child to teacher ratio. Each classroom has a teacher and an assistant working with no more than 8 children. Michael Academy is run by a speech therapist who has a big input in the planning of daily activities and programs. Our weekly program includes Junior Jive (music program), Speech and Language group therapy, Fit Feet (movement program), arts and crafts and baking (all included in the school fees). We use the Gemiini video modelling program on a daily basis in order to further encourage speech and language skills.  Each child who joins Michael Academy receives a speech therapy and occupational therapy assessment within the first few weeks. Michael Academy also offers an extended program which includes weekly individual speech therapy and occupational therapy.

Michael Academy is a registered non-profit organisation and public benefit organisation. As a non-profit organisation, we are subsidising the fees in order to help parents afford the opportunity to provide their children with a treatment program developed by skilled professionals. We also have a financial aid system in place and parents are able to apply for this if necessary. Michael Academy has been opened in memory of a little angel in heaven and we are inspired to help children who are in need of a little extra care and support. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive individualised program that is accessible to a wide range of children and encourages growth in all areas of development.

Approach

Michael Academy is a therapy-based early-intervention learning centre for children with special needs. We follow a program that has been devised in order to implement therapy goals as well as general school curriculum goals. Our main focus is to provide early intervention so that our children can come as close as possible to reaching their age appropriate norms. A child who is unable to complete tasks at an age appropriate level, will struggle at school or even not be able to cope with traditional schooling. Our children are exposed to curriculum based activities and goals on a daily basis as well as individualised therapy goals. Understanding Autism, we also spend a lot of time working on social communication skills, pragmatic skills and listening skills. Our children need to be able to learn how to use these skills in order to be in a position to learn and cope in a classroom  environment and in every day life. Learning curriculum based skills off by heart is not enough for our children as they need to learn how to understand what they are learning and how to generalise what they are learning to different environments. Social and language skills are of utmost importance to us at Michael Academy. Our children are taught the functional skills that are necessary to help them adapt to different environments and to be in an optimal space for learning.

Donations

Learning centre for children with special needs.

Michael Academy, as an organisation, is reliant on external funds in order to continue helping our children develop to their full potential. We have subsidised the fees in order to allow parents to afford a comprehensive program aimed at improving all areas of development. In addition, some of our individual children are in need of financial aid to attend the learning centre or to receive additional therapy sessions. Michael Academy also aims to offer a full bursary to at least one child per year. We will be truly grateful for any donations made to help the organisation or to help individual children.

Chairperson/Owner:

Leanne Bezuidenhout (Shelly)
Leanne has owned a speech therapy practice in Table View since 2008 and opened Michael Academy in August 2015. Leanne became aware of the huge need for special schooling while seeing children at her practice. Many children were coming to speech therapy sessions, but were unable to find a suitable school to attend. Many of these children were on the Autism Spectrum and schools were unwilling to accept them as they came across as disruptive and naughty. These children would end up staying at home and not receiving the intensive early intervention that they needed. In 2013 Leanne’s nephew was stillborn at 38 weeks and he had Down’s Syndrome. Baby Michael became Leanne’s inspiration to follow her dream of opening a learning centre to help children who had special needs. Leanne started with fundraising initiatives in 2014 and was finally able to open Michael Academy on a small scale in 2015. Michael Academy opened in August 2015 with one teacher and two children. Leanne started the centre as a non-profit organisation in order to help those who are unable to afford the expensive tuition necessary to help a child with special needs.
